Greetings fellow WFTOA members,
As I reflect on the past few years I have come to realize that I have a lot less work on my plate as it relates to WFTOA. This is both good and bad. I have taken on additional responsibilities at my agency and need the extra time, but bittersweet in that I do miss it a bit. As your immediate past Director and having served as a board member before that, it has become clear that there was a lot of work that was done for the Association. As board members become more involved in WFTOA that additional workload seems to just become routine. Now reflecting back I can see how much time it did take to do all the tasks necessary to run an Association as large and successful as WFTOA.
During our past conference elections took place for board member positions. Some left, some new members joined, but a lot continued on. This is truly inspiring as it shows true dedication and commitment to this Association. Your new Executive Director has been a board member for years and will serve us well. I look forward to working with him and his leadership.
In the past few years we have experienced change. One of the largest changes was moving away from NAFTO and creating our own Association. We have tried different conference agendas ranging from a few big name speakers, to only one big name speaker, to breakout sessions, all in an effort to provide the best and most diverse training we could to reach all of our members. The board of Directors will continue in that endeavor. We have formed an excellent working relationship with the Wisconsin Training and Standards Bureau and have been fortunate enough to obtain grant funding to keep the costs of the conference down. With the economic downturn I am not as optimistic as I was a few years back in obtaining future grant funding. We will need to look at other ways of how to put on future conferences at an affordable cost to the membership. One of the ideas we discussed, and has been recommended by Training and Standards, is for some of the 130 plus organizations that request grant funding to consolidate and run joint conferences. The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training Officers Association (WLETOA) and WFTOA may be a good example of this. Although we have separate board and Associations, we may benefit by having a joint conference so we can collectively bring in good trainers who may otherwise be too expensive for us to afford individually.
As we move into the future rest assured that your board of Directors will do all they can to provide the membership with the best training they can. Regional training opportunities will also be made available through different agencies and Technical Colleges. I am very optimistic about the future of our Association and look forward to continuing to serve you as an advisor.
